11:45 P.M.
Etching and aquatint, 1947, edition 35. 19 3/4 x 12 in. Signed, titled and numbered in pencil. This is a superb, early impression printed on heavy wove paper. The margins are full and the condition is excellent. This is arguably Calapai's finest print and it's a landmark New York image from the 1940s. Beautifully designed, "11:45 P.M." is an expressionist style image with a potent urban social commentary. The influence of S.W.Hayer and Altelier 17 is clearly evident in Calapai's technical virtuosity.
