Fish Tank - RIST

Fish Tank
Woodcut printed in colors, 1944, Williams 16, edition 150. 9 1/4 x 11 3/4 in. Signed in ink within the image, lower right. Titled and numbered in pencil. This is a fine, luminous impression with full margins. The condition is excellent. Rist was probably introduced to the woodcut medium by Morris Blackburn when they visited a show of Japanese prints in New York. Yet Rist was essentially self-taught and designed, cut and printed his own blocks. This print is illustrated on page 171 of American Prize Prints of the Twentieth Century by Albert Reese.

Fruit Dish - RIST

Fruit Dish
Woodcut printed in colors, 1945, Williams 18, edition 150. 14 x 9 7/8 in. Signed in ink in the image in the lower right. Titled in pencil. This is a superb, luminous impression of this major work. The paper is a light cream Japanese and the margins are full but modest in size which is typical. Although the recorded edition is 150, it's doubtful Rist printed them all due to the time consuming nature of inking and printing multiple blocks and even sections of the same block over and over. In the catalogue it states, "As many as fifty or more impressions are sometimes required to complete a given print." (See page 8).

Technically superb, Rist has taken this rather simple subject and transformed it into a tour de force of the woodcut medium. The rose petals are beautifully defined.
