Castle on a Mountain -  VELDHEER

Castle on a Mountain
Woodcut, circa 1900-1910, edition unknown. 15 5/8 x 19 5/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. Inscribed in pencil, "voor S. Moulijn." This is a very fine impression on a white wove paper. The margins are full and the condition is fine. (There's a subtle soft wrinkle in the lower right margin outside of the image.) Veldheer specialized in printmaking. He produced book designs, portraits, landscapes and some of his woodcuts were printed in colors. His work is illustrated and discussed in Holland on Paper in the Age of Art Nouveau (2014) by Cliff Ackley; see pages 208-209. He was influenced by Japanese printmaking and this topic is discussed in Japanese Invloed op Nederlandandse kunst, Imitatie et Inspiratie van 1650 tot heden (1991) published by the Rijksmuseum (Ch. van Rappard-Boon, et al.); pages 133-134. The dedication is to fellow Dutch artist, Simon Moulijn (1866-1948), a well-known lithographer.

Woodcut, circa 1900-1910, edition unknown but certainly fewer than 50. 14 1/2 x 17 1/8 in. Signed in pencil and inscribed "epreuve". A good impression with what appears to be a soft printing crease in the image. Full margins. Very good condition. A large, outstanding example of Veldheer's work in the woodcut medium.

Woodcut, 1916, edition unknown but small. 19 1/4 x 15 1/8 in. Signed in pencil. Numbered and dated as follows, "No.6 (12-1916)" This is a fine luminous impression printed on Japanese paper. The margins are full and the condition is fine. This stellar woodcut shows the influence of Japanese prints which were exhibited in Europe at the time. The artist was friends with Theo van Hoytema and he produced a woodcut portrait of Theo which we currently have available.

This is a fine impression printed on Japanese paper with full margins. The condition is quite good. Veldheer specialized in printmaking. Wood engraving, circa 1900-10, edition unknown. 12 5/8 x 7 in. Signed in the block and signed in pencil. A fine impression in very good condition. The margins are wide and probably full. (There's a very faint suggestion of foxing here and there.) Published by S.L. van Looy, Amsterdam. Veldheer produced a series of highly detailed wood engravings based on his German travels.

Woodcut, 1900, Braches 971109; one of a few proofs. 9 7/8 x 7 in. Initialed in the block, lower left. This is a superb impression with full margins. The condition is fine apart from a subtle stain in the lower right margin. This wonderful Dutch art nouveau woodcut is the cover design for the book of the same title. It was published in Haarlem by Erven F. Bohn, 1900. Veldheer was a masterful woodblock artist who spent considerable time in France and was influenced by Japanese prints as well as by Paris art dealer, Samuel Bing.

Woodcut, 1900, very small edition; proofs only. 9 5/8 x 6 7/8 in. Initialed in the block with the monogram and signed in pencil, lower right. This is a fine impression inscribed "proefdruk" in pencil. Wide margins. In very good condition overall; time staining and minor foxing. This wonderful Dutch art nouveau woodcut is the cover design for the book of the same title. It was published in Haarlem by Erven F. Bohn, 1900. Veldheer was a masterful woodblock artist who spent considerable time in France and was influenced by Japanese prints as well as Paris art dealer, Samuel Bing.

Woodcut printed in blue, circa 1915, edition unknown 11 3/4 x 15 1/2 in. Signed in pencil. This is a very good impression of this rare print. This is a thin Japanese paper and the margins are full. The condition is very good other than for minor marginal discoloration and traces of the blue ink in the margins. This work exists in color variations.

Wood engraving (woodcut?), circa 1913, small edition. 6 3/8 x 6 3/8 in. Signed in pencil and also inscribed "proefdruk." This is a fine impression of an uncommon print. This is the full, untrimmed sheet with a deckle edge all around. The condition is fine other than minor paper imperfections, one in the blank area at left, and an old fold in the lower margin. This important portrait is illustrated on page 16 of Theo van Hoytema 1863-1917, the 1999 exhibition catalogue for the Drents Museum/Gemeentemuseum show about the artist. An impression of this work is located in the Rijksmuseum collection.

Woodcut printed in colors, probably 1915, very small edition. 19 5/8 x 15 1/2 in. Unsigned. This is a fine impression of this extremely rare print. The paper is a fibrous Japanese mounted to an early support paperboard. The margins measure about 3/4 inches all around. Veldheer was profoundly influence by Japanese prints and he created a small group of fish woodcuts around 1915. The influence of Hiroshige (1797-1858) is clearly evident. Veldheer's color woodcuts are now very rare and were certainly printed in small editions. The Fishing Boat
Wood engraving, undated (circa 1900), edition unknown. 8 1/4 x 5 3/4 in. Signed in pencil. A fine impression in fine condition. The margins are wide if not full. There is a pencil dedication to fellow artist, W.B. Tholen. Veldheer was an important woodblock artist at the turn of the century. He was a close friend of Nieuwenkamp who also championed the woodcut revivial in Holland during this era.
