Woodcut printed in colors, circa 1920-25, Falk/Newport Art Museum 47, edition 50. 10 3/4 x 8 1/4 in. Signed and numbered in pencil, lower left. This is a fine, luminous impression printed on a fibrous, white Japanese paper. The margins are substantial and this is probably the full, untrimmed sheet. The condition is excellent. Gardiner studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and later taught there for over thirty years. She was influenced by Arthur Wesley Dow and followed the traditional Japanese approach of cutting separate blocks for each color. Her work is discussed at length in Paths to the Press, Printmaking and American Women Artists, 1910-1960 (2006) by Elizabeth G. Seaton, et al., pages 132-133. This outstanding print is illustrated on the cover of the catalogue raisonné.

Boy with Hoop
Woodcut printed in colors, undated (circa 1920), Falk 48; edition 25. 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 in. Initialed in the image "E.D.G." in pencil. A fine impression in fine condition. The sheet has been trimmed to the image on three sides, probably by the artist. The left margin extends out about 2" and shows watercolor test spots related to the inking and printing of this impression. Gardiner was a life-long teacher at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Passaconaway
Woodcut printed in colors, 1919, Falk 26, edition perhaps 40. 7 1/2 x 10 in. Signed in the image in pencil, lower right. This is a very fine impression with full margins. The paper is an off-white fibrous wove and the condition is fine. (There's a small paper loss at the upper right corner, away from the image.) Mt. Passaconaway is a scenic 4,000 foot high peak in the White Mountains which is in Grafton County, New Hampshire.

The Calf
Woodcut printed in colors, circa 1925-30, Not in Falk, edition 30. 8 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. Signed, numbered and titled in pencil. This is a fine impression printed on thin Japanese paper. The margins are wide. The condition is very good other than slight foxing and handling creases in the upper margin area, well away from the image. Gardiner exhibited extensively in the 1920s and 1930s throughout New England as well as in New York and Philadelphia.

The Young Gardener
Woodcut printed in colors, possibly 1927, small edition. 8 1/2 x 5 3/4 in. Signed in pencil, lower left. This is a superb impression printed on Japan paper. The margins are probably full and untrimmed and the condition is excellent. This is one of her finest prints and is quite uncommon. To quote Peter Falk, "Eliza Draper Gardiner was among America's pioneers in color woodblock printing. To be counted among this small group would be a proud claim for most artists, yet Gardiner is further distinguished by her unexpected success in expressing human emotions...
