Spleen (Melancholy) - LEGRAND

Spleen (Melancholy)
Etching and aquatint printed in colors, 1900, Arwas 176 (xi/XI), edition 50; Exsteens 156. 19 5/8 x 13 in. Signed in the plate, lower left. Signed and numbered in pencil and also with Pellet's initials. This is a fine impression printed on cream wove paper. The margins are probably full and the condition is fine apart from three old paper hinges on the right edge of the sheet, verso, and a subtle spot of foxing in the lower left. This large and exceptional work went through eleven states of development and was ultimately printed with three color plates. (Spleen is also a rare print as only thirty-five impressions were printed from the intended edition of fifty.) In the distance is Sacré-Cour Basilica in Montmartre, Paris.
