Provincetown Scene with Couple and Cow - ADA GILMORE (CHAFFEE) - white-line color woodcut

ADA GILMORE (CHAFFEE)
American, (1883-1955)

White-line color woodcut, circa 1917-18, a very small edition. 9 1/4 x 10 3/8 in. Signed in ink in the image, lower right corner, "Ada Gilmore." This is a fine impression of this exceedingly rare print. The colors are vibrant. The margins are wide and probably full. The condition is very good apart from occasional subtle stains in the margins and some of the same on the verso. (She printed on thick, absorbent, dampened paper with fluid watercolor inks, all of which may account for some of this discoloration.) Gilmore was one of the original Provincetown printers and she produced woodcuts between 1915 and 1923. Her work is of the utmost rarity. There is not a single auction record for a color woodcut by her as recorded by Gordons online database. She married the artist Oliver Chaffee in 1925 after she was done making prints.       SOLD
