The Chess Players JAN WIEGERS Dutch, (1893-1959) Woodcut, circa 1925, edition unknown. 19 1/4 x 15 1/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. This is a fine impression printed on fairly thin Japanese paper. The margins are wide and the condition is good. This large woodcut is illustrated on page 131 of the 2002 Groninger Museum retrospective catalog of Wiegers work, "De Ceremoniemeester Heeft Het Spel Laten Beginnen." This is a later printing from the block, probably done in the 1950s. $3,500 |

A fine impression printed on chine applique with wide margins. The condition is very good other than minor rippling in the lower margin. This uncommon print was published by Dieperink & Co., Amsterdam. $650 |

de Geleerde (The Scientist) JOS WILS Belgian, (1908-1989) Woodcut (or linoleum cut), circa 1945, edition unknown 6 3/4 x 4 3/4 in. Signed in the block and signed and titled in pencil. This is a very good impression with wide margins. The condition is fine. Wils studied engraving at the Academy in Antwerp where he was a student of Brocas. His main focus from 1932 on was engraving and he founded the magazine Jeugdland (1937-40). He was held captive by the Germans during the first part of WWII. The potent antiwar sentiment of this expressionist image is most compelling. $650 |

Pelican JAN WITTENBERG Dutch, (1886-1963) Woodcut, undated (circa 1925-, edition unknown. 15 1/2 x 11 1/4 in. Signed in pencil. A fine impression with full margins. Some thin spots showing on the verso along the sheet edges. Wittenberg produced woodcuts as well as wood engravings. He depicted animal subjects in a creative and often decorative manner reflecting to some extent the work of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. $900 |

This is a fine impression in very good condition. (There's a soft crease in the lower margin.) This is a published state of a print probably produced as a series of charming views of the city of Amsterdam. (Vereeniging van Beeldende Kunsten 1932) $550 |
