Marsh Moon WILLIAM S. RICE American, (1873-1963) Woodcut printed in colors, circa 1925, edition probably 15-20. 7 1/8 x 9 in. Signed and titled in pencil. This is a fine impression printed on a medium Japanese paper. The margins are about 1/2" on all sides and they have reinforced breaks on the left and right sides. (Breaks can occur from excessive pressure in the printing process.) This work is illustrated on page 42 of Arthur Wesley Dow and American Arts and Crafts by Nancy Green and Jessie Poesch (1999). That impression varies from ours in the added printing for the clouds at top. Variations such as this are found in Rice's work and among so many other creative blockprint artists. $3,800 |

Roses #2 LUIGI RIST American, (1889-1959) Woodcut printed in colors, 1946, Williams 20; edition 150. 7 1/8 x 9 1/16 in. Signed in ink in the image and titled in pencil below the image at left. This is a fine, dark impression of this uncommon print. The margins are about 1" all around which is typical for Rist's woodcuts. The condition is very good. Technically superb, Rist has taken this rather simple subject and transformed it into a tour de force of the woodcut medium. The rose petals are beautifully defined. $4,250 |

Rhododendron LUIGI RIST American, (1889-1959) Woodcut printed in colors, 1942, Williams 10; edition 100. 13 1/8 x 10 in. Signed in ink in the image and titled in pencil, lower left. This is a fine, luminous impression with full margins. The condition is excellent. Rist printed on Japanese paper and the margins are typically not very wide. This is an outstanding image and like so many of Rist's prints, there are notable color variations seen during the course of printing the edition. There is a much darker version of Rhododendron and this one is done with a brighter palette. This, of course, is one of the most appealing aspects of the color woodcut medium; variations on a theme via choice of color and selective inking. $4,500 |
