Scene on the French Coast - JOSEPH MALLORD WILLIAM TURNER - etching with mezzotint

JOSEPH MALLORD WILLIAM TURNER
British, (1775-1851)

Etching with mezzotint , 1807, Finberg 4 (i/III); edition unknown. 8 3/8 x 11 3/8 in. Signed with the printed signature, "drawn and etched by J.M.W. Turner." This is a superb, luminous impression of the rare first state, with the mezzotint just added by Charles Turner. This early impression from Part I of Turner's "Liber Studiorum" is from the collection of the artist (Lugt 1498) and was in the Turner estate auction of 1873. The margins are full and the condition is quite good. (The paper bears a partial dovecoat watermark.) This print is an outstanding image from a project that occupied over fifteen years of Turner's life. The last published plates were issued in 1819. This image was based on a pen and sepia drawing made in preparation for the print.       SOLD
