De Ophaalbrug, Edam - WOJ NIEUWENKAMP - etching

WOJ NIEUWENKAMP
Dutch, (1874-1950)

Etching, 1916, Nieuwenkamp E 176, edition unknown. 15 1/2 x 19 3/8 in. Signed, titled and inscribed in pencil "E176." This is a fine, luminous impression printed on cream-colored Japanese paper. The margins are wide and the condition is very good. (There's slight ripping to the sheet and a faint suggestion of old adhesive in the outer margins from a previous face mat.) This large, late work epitomizes Nieuwenkamp's stylish and highly descriptive approach to printmaking. He would usually sign his prints with his name and "√©preuve d'artiste," as seen here, and this impression is also referenced "E 176" which stands for etsen (etching) and number 176 from a total of 192 different recorded etchings. His editions are generally quite small; certainly few than 50 impressions and probably far less than that. Nieuwenkamp was the first European artist to travel to Bali and produced considerable work based on his multiple trips there.      SOLD
