Provincetown Players - MARGUERITE ZORACH - linoleum cut

MARGUERITE ZORACH
American, (1887-1968)

Linoleum cut, circa 1916, Flint 73, very small edition. 7 7/8 x 11 5/8 in. Signed and titled in pencil. This is a superb impression printed on thin off-white Japanese paper. The margins are wide and probably full. The condition is fine apart from a tiny loss in the upper right corner of the margin. This superb work is illustrated on page 52 of Janet Flint's, Provincetown Printers, A Woodcut Tradition (1983), the groundbreaking catalogue on the subject. The Provincetown Players theatrical group began in 1915 and this print was reproduced on the troupe's playbills and posters. She also did set designs with her husband, William. (See page 249 of Paths to the Press, Printmaking and American Women Artists (1910-1960), by Elizabeth Seaton, et al.) Impressions of this important early 20th century American modernist blockprint are located in the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Smithsonian.       SOLD
