Color Woodcuts by Vincent Van Ojen

This prominent Dutch artist was born in 1960 and graduated from the graphic section of the Royal Academy of Arts in 's-Hertogenbosch. He handles the ancient woodcut technique in a unique way and in 1992 he received the Dutch Graphics Award.

Although the editions are very small and completely printed by the artist, Van Ojen's woodcuts are widespread among collections in Europe and Japan. His method is to print several wooden boards or blocks inked in different colors over each other. New colors originate in this process of overprinting. He knows how to make the most of the typical qualities of the technique such as characteristic lines and grain in the wood and, most of all, color overlap, using all these properties as important visual elements. His favorite subjects are still lives, flowers, landscapes and forest views.
