Etching, circa 1868, Curtis & Proute 49; Jennings 45; edition unknown. 19 3/8 x 13 5/8 in. Signed in the plate, lower right. Signed in pencil, lower left. This is a superb, atmospheric impression printed on Japanese paper. The margins are substantial and the condition is very good. (There's some soft rippling showing in the margins.) This large and majestic print depicts a marsh on the Ain River in the vicinity of Lyon, France. Appian etched a much smaller version of this subject which also appeared in 1868. Pencil-signed prints by Appian are not especially common and this print is an exceptional example of his work.

Etching, 1887, Curtis/Prouté 66 (iii/III), edition unknown. 14 1/8 x 20 1/4 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. This is a fine, richly inked impression printed on a sturdy cream-colored Japanese paper. The margins are wide. The condition is very good other than faint remnants of an old adhesive showing in the margins from a previous mount. This third state impression was copyrighted and published in New York by Rodtke, Lauckner & Co. in 1888. This caption is printed in the upper right corner near the image and is not mentioned in the raisonné. This is an exceptionally large work printed with great tonal effects.

This is a fine impression of the second, completed state which shows a remarque of a branch in the lower left. The paper is an off-white Japanese and the margins are trimmed along the platemark. Provenance: William Weston Gallery, London.

Etching, 1878, Curtis & Proute 52 (i/III). 14 x 17 7/8 in. Signed and dated in the plate and also signed in pencil. A fine, luminous impression of the very rare first state, before the plate was cut down. Wide margins. Very good condition apart from a repaired split in the lower right corner, just to the platemark. Signed impressions of Appian etchings are quite rare.

Etching, 1878, Curtis & Prouté 52 (ii/III), edition unknown. 15 3/8 x 11 1/4 in. Signed and dated in the plate. Signed in pencil, lower left. This is a fine impression printed on thin Japanese paper. The margins are full. The condition is fine. This lovely and exemplary Appian etching is from the collection of Henri M. Petiet. His ink stamp stamp is on the verso, lower left. In this, the second state of three, the plate was trimmed a bit. The third state was published by Cadart.
