Black Geese Etching and aquatint printed in colors, 1934, edition probably about 50. 9 1/4 x 14 in. Signed in the plate, lower left. Signed and titled in pencil. Here we have a superb impression printed on fibrous, cream-colored Japanese paper. The margins are full. The condition is very good apart from very faint toning within an earlier mat opening and old hinges showing at the top corners of the margins. The print was published by Arthur Greatoreux in London. Austen was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1907. Her color prints are considerably less common than the black and white prints and this a very good example of her work. SOLD |

Zebra Finches Aquatint printed in colors, circa 1940, edition unknown; perhaps 50 impressions. 6 7/8 x 9 5/8 in. Signed and titled in pencil. This is a fine, luminous impression with wide margins. The condition is excellent. Austen is best known for her bird and animal etchings and she did not start working in color until about 1930 or so. She was quite successful during her lifetime and was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1907. She produced some two hundred etched plates but most are in black and white. SOLD |
