Village Scene Woodcut, circa 1920, very small edition. 6 5/8 x 7 1/2 in. Signed in pencil, lower right of sheet. This is a fine impression printed on tissue-thin Japanese paper. The margins are irregular but are also untrimmed. Very good condition. (There's some discoloration in the outer margins and minor losses at the lower edge of the sheet.) This is a rare print as are all of de Smet's expressionist woodcuts. Along with Constant Permeke and Frits van den Berghe, de Smet is one of the preeminent Belgian expressionist painters. SOLD |

Vissersdorp (Fisherman's Village) Woodcut, 1919, very small edition; proofs only. 9 1/4 x 8 in. Signed, titled and dated in pencil. This is a fine, dark impression on cream laid paper. The condition is fine. The margins appear to be full and untrimmed. (A pencil annotation or dedication has been erased at right, just above the signature. This is an early, potent work by de Smet, one of the most important of the Flemish expressionist printmakers. It's a rare print. SOLD |

The paper is a thin light tan wove. The condition is fine. This is a rare print as are all of de Smet's woodcuts. Along with Constant Permeke and Fritz van den Berghe, de Smet is one of the preeminent Belgian expressionist painters. This print relates closely to a painting done in 1920. $2,500 |
