Garden Scene
Etching printed in colors a la poupee, circa 1920, edition unknown (inscribed 9 3/4 x 6 7/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. A fine, luminous impression of this very rare print. The margins are wide and the condition is fine apart from the faintest suggestion of discoloration within an earlier mat opening. Clements' color etchings are discussed at length in David Acton's book, "A Spectrum of Innovation, Color in American Printmaking 1890-1960," (1990). Chances are good Clements met Mary Cassatt in Paris during the 1880s.
