Garçonnet Jouant ( Boy Playing) - LEMMEN

Garçonnet Jouant ( Boy Playing)
Lithograph, 1900, Cardon 24, a few dozen proofs ( 12 7/8 x 14 in. Signed and date on the stone, lower left. Signed with an estate stamp "GL" (not in Lugt) in the lower right corner margin. This is a fine, subtle impression printed on china paper. The margins are probably full. The condition is very good apart from a few modest repairs in the margin edges and the occasional soft rippling along the top edge of the sheet. This exceptional and large work depicts the artist's wife, Aline, and their son, Pierre (b. 1895). This endearing subject certainly reminds us of Mary Cassatt's many versions of the mother and child theme. In addition, the print is illustrated and discussed on page 265 of "Les XX and the Belgian Avant-Garde: Prints, Drawings and Books ca. 1890" (1992) by Stephen Goddard, et al.

The Model (Le Modele) - LEMMEN

The Model (Le Modele)
Lithograph, 1900, Cardon 30; from a small edition ( 13 x 13 1/2 in. Signed with the artist's monogram and date on the stone. Also, in the lower right is the artist's estate stamp (not in Lugt). (Lemmen's prints were rarely signed in pencil.) He was an active member of Les XX and he was an exceptional neo-impressionist painter. His lithographs are not common and they were printed in generally small editions.
