We are pleased to represent the contemporary Dutch woodcut artist, Grietje Postma (b. 1961). She specializes in landscapes, and her technique is the reduction woodcut; a single block is printed through several states beginning with dark and ending with light colors. The resulting prints are really quite remarkable.
Postma studied woodcut technique at the Academie Minerva in Groningen with Wim van Veen. The reduction method, as opposed to the multiple block approach, employs one block with the darkest color being printed first and the complete edition of perhaps twenty is fully printed. From there, cuts are made in the block and the next lightest color is printed for the entire edition on the same sheets of paper. This process continues so that ultimately, the block is almost completely cut away and the lightest colors are the last to be printed. The effects are subtle layering of colors with little margin for error. More recently, as Postma continues to refine her technique, she will start with a few light colors, then dark, then working back to light again. This is a time consuming process that she has mastered with great success.
These beautifully crafted woodcuts have an Arts and Crafts look to them. They suggest ties to past traditions and at the same time are fresh and vibrant for today’s collectors. Craftsmanship is paramount and the natural landscape is the theme.
The artist produces only a few different images each year. The editions are small given the rigorous nature of the printing process. We are pleased to offer these exceptional prints and we welcome any inquiries you may have. Postma’s work has been widely exhibited in Holland and we think our American clients with a keen interest in woodcuts will certainly admire her achievements.
Furthermore, we are pleased to announce the Rijksmuseum has added two Postma woodcuts to their 20th century collection.
Many of her editions are now sold out due to the small edition size and the immense interest in her work here and in her native Holland.
