Bouquet Linoleum cut printed in five colors, 1921, Taillaert 43, edition 119. 11 5/8 x 9 in. Signed and dated in pencil. lower right. This is a superb impression on china paper with fresh colors. The margins are full and the condition is very good. (This print was issued in a folder and bears a trace the original horizontal crease, as issued.) There are subtle fold marks in the outer margins as well as a few tiny glue spots in the margins only.) This is Tytgat's only floral print and it's quite rare, especially here with these colors and the original presentation folder. There's a label with the folder indicating this print was exhibited at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, in 1973. Tytgat's editions are complicated, even with the very complete Taillaert catalogue raisonné published in 1999. Apart from proofs, this impression is from the first numbered edition printed in 1921. Impressions exist in color variations and in black and white and the last printing of 60 was done in 1925. This is an exceptional and beautifully crafted print by this noted Belgian painter and printmaker. SOLD |

Caravans Woodcut and linoleum cut printed in colors, 1919, Taillaert 40, planche 6; edition 60. 6 x 8 in. Signed, dated "1925" and numbered in pencil. This is an exceptional impression printed on thin Japanese paper with the printed title just below the image. The margins are full and the condition is very good. (There a few soft wrinkles in the lower left corner of the margins.) This is one of six plates from Tytgat's most famous series, "Carrousels et Barques." This is the first edition of this print with later printings done unnumbered and in black and white only. Tytgat's style is both expressionist and charmingly naive. He was interested in "scènes quotidiennes," popular tales, the circus and the tradition of the Flemish kermesse. This impression is from the collection of Auguste Taevernier (1895-1976), (Lugt 3334), who was the author of a catalogue raisonné of James Ensor prints.

Merry-go-Round Woodcut and linoleum cut printed in colors, 1918-1919, Taillaert 40 (planche 3), edition 45. 6 1/4 x 8 1/16 in. Signed, numbered and inscribed in pencil,"1er essai," and "épreuve d'artiste, Edgard Tytgat, London 1918." This is a superb, early impression with the text, before the later printings when the colors are not as vibrant and not as richly inked. The margins are full and the condition is excellent. "Carrousels and Baraques" is Tytgat's best known series of prints and this set of six works was extremely popular. There were multiple editions as well as impressions in black and white and in single colors. This superb impression is from the collection of Auguste Taevernier (1895-1976), (Lugt 3334) who was the author of a catalogue raisonné of James Ensor. SOLD |
