Caravans Woodcut and linoleum cut printed in colors, 1919, Taillaert 40, planche 6; edition 60. 6 x 8 in. Signed, dated "1925" and numbered in pencil. This is an exceptional impression printed on thin Japanese paper with the printed title just below the image. The margins are full and the condition is very good. (There a few soft wrinkles in the lower left corner of the margins.) This is one of six plates from Tytgat's most famous series, "Carrousels et Barques." This is the first edition of this print with later printings done unnumbered and in black and white only. Tytgat's style is both expressionist and charmingly naive. He was interested in "scènes quotidiennes," popular tales, the circus and the tradition of the Flemish kermesse. This impression is from the collection of Auguste Taevernier (1895-1976), (Lugt 3334), who was the author of a catalogue raisonné of James Ensor prints.

La Procession à Watermael Woodcut, 1919, Taillaert 41 (planche 1); edition 60 (50?) in black and white. 5 7/8 x 7 7/8 in. Signed, dated (1921) and numbered in pencil. This is a fine impression printed on thin Japanese paper. The margins are full. The condition is very good overall other than occasional subtle spots of foxing and there's a printing crease in the upper left margin, apart from the image. This print is from his celebrated series, "Carrousels et Baraques" which was created in London in 1919. This is one of 50(60?) black and white impressions printed in 1925. (There were color editions as well.) Tytgat's style is both expressionist and charmingingly naive. He was interested in "scènes quotidiennes", popular tales, the circus and the the Flemish kermesse. He was a unique and gifted artist working as a painter and printmaker and the fine, early impressions of his prints are hard to find. SOLD |
