Compositie (Stilleven) Composition (Still Life) Woodcut, 1916, Huussen/van Paaschen-Louwerse 313, edition probably 30. 8 x 11 in. Signed in pencil, lower left. A superb impression printed on thin Japanese paper. The margins are full and the condition is very good. (There is slight, subtle foxing showing in the margins and minor wrinkles in the margins from the printing process.) Van Heemskerck produced a remarkable series of woodcuts dating from about 1915-1921. This avant garde work was certainly out of the mainstream of Dutch aesthetics at the time and she was influenced by Mondrian and the writings of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). She exhibited regularly in Germany through her connections with Herwarth Walden and Galerie der Sturm (Berlin) and her work was greatly admired there and acquired by collectors. Van Heemskerck also excelled in stained glass and received many commissions for this work. Impressions of this print are located in the Rijksprentenkabinet and the Stedelijk. SOLD |
