Moonlight, Hudson River - CHARLES F. W. MIELATZ
Medium: aquatint
CHARLES F. W. MIELATZ
American, (1864-1919)
Aquatint, 1905-10, edition unknown. 11 3/4 x 14 3/4 in. Signed in pencil and inscribed "imp." indicating this impression was printed by the artist. This is a superb impression of this large and very rare New York print. The margins are full and the condition is excellent; the printed surface is very well preserved. (There's a pencil notation on the bottom margin indicating this is a trial proof.) This stunning and subtle work is an American tonalist print, par excellence. Certainly, we think of Whistler and his influence but also the paintings of Inness and Twachtman, among others. Charles Mielatz was a master of aquatint and this print is exceptional. Here he was able to take a conventional graphic medium and create a distinctive, painterly color print which transcends so much of the prosaic and predictable landscape etching of the era. Another impression of "Moonlight, Hudson River" is found in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
