Evening, Outside London - YOSHIJIRO URUSHIBARA
Medium: woodcut printed in colors
YOSHIJIRO URUSHIBARA
Japanese, (1880-1953)
Woodcut printed in colors, undated (probably done in the 1920s), small edition. 13 7/8 x 9 1/2 in. Signed in pencil and inscribed "No.3". This is a superb impression with full margins. The condition is quite good apart from minor handling marks in the margins here and there. Urushibara came to London at the age of nineteen and ultimately landed a position in the British Museum. He lived in London and France until 1934 and had a profound influence on many woodcut artists working in the 1920s. Walter Phillips, John Platt, Allen Seaby, Frank Brangwyn and others were indebted to Urushibara. This woodcut is not particularly common.
