Garçonnet Jouant ( Boy Playing) - GEORGES LEMMEN
Medium: lithograph
GEORGES LEMMEN
Belgian, (1865-1916)
Lithograph, 1900, Cardon 24, a few dozen proofs ( 12 7/8 x 14 in. Signed and date on the stone, lower left. Signed with an estate stamp "GL" (not in Lugt) in the lower right corner margin. This is a fine, subtle impression printed on china paper. The margins are probably full. The condition is very good apart from a few modest repairs in the margin edges and the occasional soft rippling along the top edge of the sheet. This exceptional and large work depicts the artist's wife, Aline, and their son, Pierre (b. 1895). This endearing subject certainly reminds us of Mary Cassatt's many versions of the mother and child theme. In addition, the print is illustrated and discussed on page 265 of "Les XX and the Belgian Avant-Garde: Prints, Drawings and Books ca. 1890" (1992) by Stephen Goddard, et al.
