Waterloo Bridge (London) - JAN POORTENAAR
Medium: etching and aquatint with added highlights by hand
JAN POORTENAAR
Dutch, (1886-1958)
Etching and aquatint with added highlights by hand, 1919, edition unknown. 11 5/8 x 21 1/2 in. Signed and titled in pencil. This is a fine, luminous impression printed on cream laid paper with added color highlights in the distance between the two arches of the bridge. The margins are wide and the condition is good apart from slight discoloration here and there in the margins and some toning, verso. This exceptional work gained international exposure at the time it was published by Alfred Bell, New Bond Street, London, as it was also shown in the United States. Poortenaar was certainly inspired by Whistler and this work is a prime example. He lived in London from 1914-1922.
