Woman with A Fan and Sunflowers - ETHEL MARS
Medium: white-line color woodcut
ETHEL MARS
American, (1876-1959)
White-line color woodcut, about 1916-20, very small edition. 9 3/4 x 10 1/2 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. This is a superb, luminous impression of this exceedingly rare print. The sheet has been trimmed to the image with a pencil borderline showing on all sides, and the print is attached at the top corners to the original mount, all as originally presented by the artist. The colors are remarkably fresh and the print is in flawless condition. This important Provincetown print by Mars is a pure, single block woodcut which is unlike her early Paris work which employed more than one block. This work was not included in the Mary Ryan Gallery retrospective (2000) nor have we been able to locate a museum collection which owns an impression. Mars was one of the original Provincetown woodcut artists and she taught Ada Gilmour, Mildred McMillen and Margaret Patterson. All things considered, this is the quintessential Provincetown print and a work of great rarity and beauty.
