Robert Lee's Workshop - DAVID YOUNG CAMERON
Medium: etching and drypoint
DAVID YOUNG CAMERON
Scottish, (1865-1945)
Etching and drypoint, 1905, Rinder 375, (iii/III); edition unknown. 11 3/4 x 8 3/4 in. Signed in the plate and signed in pencil, lower right. This is a superb, luminous impression printed on thin Japanese paper. The margins measure about 3/8" to 1" and appear to be untrimmed. The condition is fine. This large and impressive work was etched just two years after Whistler's death in 1903. We can easily compare this image to Whistler's Limeburner (Kennedy 46), which was part of the celebrated Thames Set published much earlier. This rare Cameron print is illustrated on page 235 of Robert Getscher's, The Stamp of Whistler, published in 1977. D.Y. Cameron was a remarkable artist in his own right and this work is a fitting tribute to an artist he much admired.
