Bead Stringers (Perleria), Venice Etching, 1882, Andrew pg. 45; edition 21 plus proofs. 13 x 8 7/8 in. Signed in the plate and signed in pencil below the image. This superb impression is dedicated to J.Carroll Beckwith, the artist, "With best wishes-to Mr. and Mrs. Beckwith on their third anniversary, June 1, 1890." The margins are trimmed to the platemark at top and sides, a la Whistler. The condition is excellent. This large, outstanding work is plate #5 from Bacher's "Etchings of Venice". Other impressions are in the Library of Congress, The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. Provenance: the artist to J. Carroll Beckwith, to Beckwith's goddaughter, by descent through the family to her grandson. This is a very rare print and it shows the artist at his best as an etcher. SOLD |

Bead Stringers, (Perleria), Venice Etching, 1882, Andrews page 45; edition 21 plus proofs. 13 x 8 7/8 in. Signed in the plate, lower right, and signed in pencil, lower left. This very fine impression is printed with tone on a thin, fibrous Japanese paper. The margins are probably full and measure 1/2" to 1". The condition is very good apart from minor toning within a previous mat opening. This rare work is plate Seven from his Venice Set.
It's interesting to make the connection between this plate and Whistler's own version of the subject, "The Bead Stringers" (Kennedy 198) which dates from 1879-1880. SOLD |
