Miner's Head - GRAMBS

Miner's Head
Aquatint, 1937, Wechsler 38, edition about 25 impressions. 14 3/4 x 11 3/4 in. Signed and titled in pencil. This superb impression bears the stamp NYC WPA FEDERAL ART PROJECT in the lower left. The margins are full and the condition is very good apart from minor soiling on the verso. This exceptional American print is illustrated and discussed in The American Scene, Prints from Hopper to Pollock (2008) by Stephen Coppel from the British Museum (see pages 154-155). This print is also illustrated in Graphic Excursions, American Prints in Black and White 1900-1950; selections from the Collection of Reba and Dave Williams (1991) by Karen Beall and David Kiehl. (See page 28.) Produced in pure aquatint, this potent, riveting image was based on her trip to the coal mines in Lanceford, Pennsylvania with her former teacher, Harry Sternberg. Impressions are located in the British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art, Washington (The Williams Collection) and the New York Public Library.
