A Day in the Country - HUNT

A Day in the Country
Etching, 1865, Hartnoll 16, edition unknown. 7 1/2 x 10 1/4 in. Unsigned as usual. This is a very fine impression printed on chine appliqué. The margins are full and the condition is very good. (There's a faint suggestion of light toning within an earlier mat opening.) This endearing Pre-Raphaelite print was published in "A Selection of Etchings by the Etching Club," consisting of twelve plates published by Joseph Cundall and Thomas Bosworth in 1865.

The Father's Leave-taking - HUNT

The Father's Leave-taking
Etching, 1879, Hartnoll 17; edition of probably less than 100 plus many trial proofs. 7 1/2 x 10 in. Initialed and dated in the plate and signed in pencil, lower right. This is a rare, superb, proof impression on large Japan paper, as released in the special proof edition of the very scarce 1879 Etching Club portfolio. The condition is very good with only minor creasing in the bottom corners of the sheet. (This impression comes from a large collection of working proofs which appeared in the London market back in 1993.) This important Pre-Raphaelite print was published as Plate 12 in the Etching Club portfolio of 1879. The proof copies of the portfolio were issued with a list of plates and the prints themselves were each mounted in a hinged thin cardboard mount. This is arguably Hunt's finest etching and it's a landmark graphic work of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Impressions of this quality are rare.

The Father's Leave-Taking
Etching, 1879, Hartnoll 17, Walker Art Gallery 83; edition unknown. 7 1/2 x 9 7/8 in. Initialed and dated in the plate, lower right. This is a fine impression on Japan paper with the completed image and with the borderline added. The margins are full and the condition is fine. This impression is one of a group of proofs printed before the formal edition of 100 for the Etching Club publication by H. Blair Ansdell. This exceptional Pre-Raphaelite print is from the collection of Mrs. Elizabeth Burt, by adoption, the artist's granddaughter. This uncommon print portrays Hunt's second wife, Edith, holding their daughter, Gladys.
