Bridge in thePass at Glencoe-Scotland - MORAN

Bridge in thePass at Glencoe-Scotland
Etching with roulette, 1882-1888, Morand/Friese 39; edition unknown. 9 1/4 x 11 5/8 in. Signed in the plate, lower right. Signed in pencil. This is a fine, luminous impression printed on a very smooth, light cream wove paper. The margins are wide and probably full. The condition is fine. This dynamic image was etched in 1882 and the artist added the thistle remarque in the lower right corner in 1888. He did at least one drawing, one watercolor and an oil painting of the subject. The plate was published by Estes and Lauriat.

Mountain of the Holy Cross, Colorado - MORAN

Mountain of the Holy Cross, Colorado
Etching, 1888, not listed in the Gilcrease catalogue, Library of Congress 4; edition unknown. 29 3/4 x 21 1/8 in. Signed and dated in the plate, lower right. Signed in pencil, lower right (and with the etched remarque of the deer in the lower left corner). Copyright and Published by The New Brunswick Royal Art Union, Limited. This is a superb, luminous impression printed on a fairly heavy, simili-Japan paper. The margins are wide and the condition is quite good. This outstanding 19th American etching is exceedingly rare. Our impression compares favorably with the one at the Amon Carter Museum; it also has the remarque and the same publisher's information printed below the image. (In the 1980s, we sold an impression published by J.D. Waring of New York without the remarque.) This large and impressive print grew out of Moran's travels throughout the American West as he helped to document the great natural beauty of the area. We know that William Henry Jackson was there first with his camera (1873) and Moran arrived the next year and made elaborate sketches of this subject. The related oil painting, which is now in the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, dates from 1875 and the etching, as seen here, was done several years later. As referenced in the Gilcrease catalogue chronology, page 233, Moran received the amazing sum at the time of $2,500 plus twelve remarque proofs as payment to make this plate.
