An Inexperienced Witch - NEVINSON

An Inexperienced Witch
Lithograph, 1919, Black 61, edition 25. 23 x 16 1/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. Inscribed in ink, lower left, "To Dodie Smith elephants never..." and on the verso in ink, "Miss Dodie Smith." This is a very fine, dramatic impression printed on sturdy Japanese paper. The margins are full. The condition is very good apart from a few splashes of watercolor largely in the lower margin, slight foxing here and there and other minor defects. Dodie Smith (1896-1990) was a British writer and the author of "The Hundred and One Dalmatians." Provenance: Gordon Cooke, London (See Summer Catalogue 1992, # 111.)

Making the Engine
Lithograph, 1917, Black 16, edition 200 signed and 100 unsigned impressions. 16 7/8 x 11 7/8 in. Signed, dated and numbered in pencil. This is a fine impression with full margins. The condition is also fine. This powerful image was part of a series of six prints called Britain's Efforts and Ideals: Making Aircraft. This was first exhibited at the Fine Art Society, London and received a very positive response. This series was Nevinson's first commission upon being appointed an official war artist in 1917.

Summer - NEVINSON

Summer
Drypoint and etching, 1924-27, Black 111, edition unknown. 9 15/16 x 13 7/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. This is a superb impression of this uncommon print. Printed on a cream laid paper with full margins, the condition of this work is fine. There's just a small amount of toning and a tiny stain in the upper left corner of the margin, well away from the image. Decidely impressionist in nature, this unusual work of a man and woman relaxing in a small boat, hidden by sunlight and the tree leaves, was done while the artist was in Paris.
