Entering the Port, St. Tropez
Woodcut printed in colors, 1923, Chapman 11, edition 150. 12 3/4 x 8 3/4 in. Signed and titled in pencil. Also inscribed, "advance proof." This is a superb, early impression before the formal edition. The margins are somewhat narrow but most likely this is the full sheet as printed. (Inky block edges show around the perimeter of the margins which is typical.) The colors are superb on this impression and Entering the Port is one of two St. Tropez woodcuts by the artist.

Lapwings
Woodcut printed in seven colors, 1936, Chapman 32, recorded edition of only 22. 16 1/2 x 8 in. Signed and numbered "XIX" in pencil. This is a fine impression printed on Japanese paper. The margins are substantial. The condition is fine apart from a small wrinkle in the lower left corner and one in the upper left. There was no projected edition for this print. The influence of Japanese printmaking is clearly evident.

Woodcut printed in colors, 1922, Chapman 10, projected edition of 100. 6 1/2 x 12 1/2 in. Signed, titled and numbered "XLI." This is a fine, atmospheric impression of this uncommon print. The margins are modest but this is probably the full, untrimmed sheet. The condition is fine. The recorded edition mentioned in the catalogue is seventy-eight. Fishing was a thriving industry in at Pilchard from around 1750 to 1880.

Woodcut printed in colors, 1927, Chapman 14, total edition unknown 15 1/4 x 8 3/4 in. Signed titled and numbered in pencil. This is a fine impression with full margins. The condition is very good apart from a subtle wrinkle in the upper right corner just touching the image and a wrinkle and small paper loss in the lower left corner margin. This impression is from the "projected" edition of 68 but we have seen two other impressions now which are numbered from an edition of 150.

Woodcut, 1927, Chapman 14, total edition unknown. 15 1/4 x 8 3/4 in. Signed, numbered and titled in pencil. The is a fine impression in fine condition. The colors are fresh and the margins are full. The Chapman catalogue lists a projected edition of 68 yet the numbering here is 21/150. This is one of the Platt's finest prints and is hard to obtain today.

Woodcut printed in colors, 1925, Chapman 13, edition 100. 9 1/8 x 13 in. Signed, numbered and titled in pencil. A fine, luminous impression printed on a medium wove paper. The margins are full and untrimmed. The condition is fine with the colors especially fresh. Impressions of this work are in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The models for this composition also relate to Platt's sketches for the "Giant Stride." His sisters are on the swing watched by his daughter and son.

Snow in Springtime
Woodcut printed in colors, 1919-1920, Chapman 6, recorded edition of 71. 9 3/4 x 11 3/4 in. Signed and dated in the block. Signed, titled and numbered in pencil. This is an especially fine impression with superb, fresh colors. The margins are full and the condition is fine other than for small old hinges at the top corners. (The projected edition here was 100.) "John Platt's colour woodcuts mark a short but important phase in British printmaking; a period when an external and foreign influence stimulated a new decorative and inventive approach to the use of color." (Hilary Chapman, from page 6 of the catalogue raisonné, 1999). This influence, of course, was the art of Japan and Japanese prints in particular. The models for this composition also relate to Platt's sketches for the "Giant Stride." His sisters are on the swing and they are being observed by Platt's daughter and son.

Woodcut printed in colors, 1931, Chapman 21 (a of c), edition unknown. 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. Signed with the artist's estate stamp on the verso, lower right corner. This is a fine impression of this extremely rare print. The margins are somewhat narrow but this is most likely the original size sheet used at the time of printing. Excellent condition. "Chapman describes this print as having "no projected edition." The influence of Japanese printmaking is clearly in evidence here.

This is a superb impression with probably the full margins. The condition is excellent. The Giant Stride was exhibited in 1922 at the 3rd International Exposition in Los Angeles organized by the Printmakers Society of California. This print was awarded the Gold Medal for best print in any medium. The artist used his family members as models for the figures in the print.

The margins are modest which is typically the case with this print and many other woodcuts by the artist. The condition is excellent. The Irish Lady, Lands End
Woodcut printed in colors, 1922, Chapman 9; projected edition of 100 impressions. 8 x 10 3/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. Numbered in pencil. This is a fine impression in fine condition. The paper is a medium-weight Japanese and the margins appear to be full, measuring about 3/4" on all sides. (The edition was never completed and just 78 impressions were recorded.) This dramatic work beautifully conveys the waves crashing against the rocks at this famous locale in Cornwall, England.

The Vltava at Prague
Woodcut printed in colors, 1930, Chapman 19, projected edition of 150. 9 5/8 x 14 1/16 in. Signed, titled and numbered (LXII) in pencil. Here we have a fine impression with full margins. The condition is very good apart from small old hinges at the four corners, verso, and a tiny wrinkle in the lower right corner of the sheet. The catalogue states that only sixty-four impressions are recorded hence this is not a common print. The Vlvata is the longest river within the Czech Republic. In the background at right is Prague Castle. Construction started in 870 and was completed in 1929!
