Abend (Evening) Woodcut printed in colors, 1921, Merx 321, edition unknown. 14 7/8 x 8 1/8 in. Signed in the block with the artist's monogram. Signed in pencil, lower right. This is a superb, richly inked impression printed on Japanese paper. The margins are full and the condition is very good. (There's a bit of soft rippling in the margins.) We consider Thiemann to be underrated as a color woodcut artist. His last important exhibition was at Galerie Glockner, Cologne, from many years ago. His landscapes, florals and marine views are stunning and they have a distinctive European arts and crafts look which is appealing to this day. Like most woodcut artists working at that time, his editions are rather small. SOLD |
