Landscape 2017-III GRIETJE POSTMA Dutch, (b. 1961) Woodcut printed in colors, 2017, edition 20. 17 x 22 3/4 in. Signed, dated, titled and numbered in pencil. This is a fine impression in excellent condition. The margins are full. As with all of Postma's work, this exemplary woodcut is printed from a single block. This is not a multiple block woodcut in the Japanese tradition, but rather, a reduction woodcut printed from a single piece of wood. The artist makes an initial design on the block and then prints the entire edition. She returns to the block and makes more design changes and then re-inks the block and prints on top of the same sheets of paper. This process continues and the end result is a build up of layers of ink resulting in a subtle yet rich overlay of colors. There is very little margin for error in this time consuming yet rewarding process. Grietje Postma is one of the finest woodcut artists working in Holland today. $850 |

Landscape 2020-I GRIETJE POSTMA Dutch, (b. 1961) Woodcut printed in colors, 2020, edition 28. 18 x 14 1/8 in. Signed, dated, titled and numbered in pencil. This is a fine impression in excellent condition. The margins are full. Postma studied the woodcut technique at the Academie Minerva in Groningen with Wim van Veen. The reduction method, as opposed to the multiple block approach, employs one block with the darkest color being printed first and the complete edition of perhaps twenty is fully printed. From there, cuts are made in the block and the next lightest color is printed for the entire edition on the same sheets of paper. This process continues so that ultimately, the block is almost completely cut away and the lightest colors are the last to be printed. The effects are subtle layering of colors with little margin for error. More recently, as Postma continues to refine her technique, she will start with a few light colors, then dark, then working back to light again. This is a time consuming process that she has mastered with great success. $900 |
