The Weary Ploughman - PALMER

The Weary Ploughman
SAMUEL PALMER
British, (1805-1881)
Etching, Begun in 1858, Lister 8 (viii?/VIII), edition unknown. 5 3/16 x 7 15/16 in. Unsigned. This is a fine, luminous impression printed on chine applique. The sheet has been trimmed within the exceptionally wide platemark but there still remains about 3/4 in. around the image. The condition is fine otherwise. The eighth and final state was published by the Etching Club in 1865 and bears the number "4" just below the image at center. This impression does not have the number so it's possibly a proof before publication. The various states of this print, along with other Palmer etchings, are difficult to sort out. The Weary Ploughman is a stellar example of Palmer's work in the etching medium and he worked intensely on this plate for about six weeks. The plate was cancelled during Palmer's lifetime in about 1875.

Landscape 2015-II - POSTMA

Landscape 2015-II
GRIETJE POSTMA
Dutch, (b. 1961)
Woodcut printed in colors, 2015, edition 26. 14 5/8 x 23 in. Signed, dated, titled and numbered in pencil. This is a superb impression in fine condition. The margins are full. As with all of Postma's work, this exemplary woodcut is printed from a single block. This is not a multiple block woodcut in the Japanese tradition, but rather, a reduction woodcut printed from a single piece of wood. The artist makes an initial design on the block and then prints the entire edition. She returns to the block and makes more design changes and then re-inks the block and prints on top of the same sheets of paper. This process continues and the end result is a build up of layers of ink resulting in a subtle yet rich overlay of colors. There is very little margin for error in this time consuming yet rewarding process. Grietje Postma is one of the finest woodcut artists working in Holland today.
