The Farm (Boerderij) - JAN WIEGERS - drypoint on tan paper

JAN WIEGERS
Dutch, (1893-1959)

Drypoint on tan paper, probably from 1921, very small edition. 10 3/8 x 8 5/8 in. Signed in red pencil lower right. This is a brilliant, early impression printed on tan paper and signed with his early signature. The margins are wide. The condition is quite good apart from minor staining here and there in the margins only. This exemplary work was done between Wiegers's first and second trip to Davos, Switzerland. The print probably depicts a view from the family home in Cortinghpoort (Groningen) and it relates closely to an oil painting called "Boterdiep" from 1921 which is in a private collection. (See page 237 of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Friends edited by Beat Stutzer, Samuel Vitali and others; illustration #9) Early impressions of prints by Wiegers are rare and this is a fine example of expressionism in the Netherlands during the 1920s. There is no formal catalogue raisonne of his prints.      SOLD
