Nightclub Scene - ALICE BAILLY
Medium: linoleum cut printed in colors
ALICE BAILLY
Swiss, (1872-1938)
Linoleum cut printed in colors, circa 1925, edition 125. 13 5/8 x 18 in. Signed and numbered in pencil. This is a fine impression printed on off-white wove paper. The margins are full and the condition is fine. Bailly started her painting and printmaking career in Paris where she exhibited at the Salon d'Automne. She was friendly with Picabia, Gris, Leger, Laurencin and others. This wonderful modernist block print certainly relates to the Grosvenor school but we are not aware of any direct connections between Bailly and these London artists. She moved to Lausaune, Switzerland, in 1923 and lived there the rest of her life.
