WILLEM H. MUHLSTAFF
Dutch, (1894-1982)
Lithograph, 1950, edition unknown. 12 3/8 x 9 in. Initialed and dated on the stone. Signed in pencil, lower right. This is a superb impression of this exquisite Dutch still life. The margins are full and the condition is very good. Muhlstaff was a gifted realist painter and lithographer who worked in an intensely detailed style reminiscent of the 17th century Dutch painters. The artist was born in ’s-Hertogenbosch and later lived in Rotterdam, Leiden and Zaandam. He was related to H.P. Bremmer who was the important advisor to Helene Kröller-Müller. He was part of the group of artist close to Bremmer that included Charley Toorop and Mendes de Costa, among others. Muhlstaff had a large collection of old Dutch pottery which he used for his paintings and prints.
