Medium: woodcut
JACOBA VAN HEEMSKERCK
Dutch, (1876-1923)
Woodcut, circa 1915-1916, Not listed in Hussen / van Paaschen-Louwerse, edition probably about 30 impressions. 6 3/8 x 9 7/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower left. This is a superb impression printed on Japanese paper. The margins are full and the condition is excellent. Van Heemskerck produced a remarkable series of woodcuts dating from about 1915-1921. This avant garde work was certainly out of the mainstream of Dutch aesthetics at the time and she was influenced by Mondrian and the writings of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). She exhibited regularly in Germany through her connections with Herwarth Walden and Galerie der Sturm (Berlin) and her work was greatly admired there and acquired by collectors. Van Heemskerck also excelled in stained glass and received many commissions for this work.
