Snow in Springtime - JOHN PLATT - woodcut printed in colors

JOHN PLATT
British, (1886-1967)

Woodcut printed in colors, 1919-1920, Chapman 6, recorded edition of 71. 9 3/4 x 11 3/4 in. Signed and dated in the block. Signed, titled and numbered in pencil. This is an especially fine impression with superb, fresh colors. The margins are full and the condition is fine other than for small old hinges at the top corners. (The projected edition here was 100.) "John Platt's colour woodcuts mark a short but important phase in British printmaking; a period when an external and foreign influence stimulated a new decorative and inventive approach to the use of color." (Hilary Chapman, from page 6 of the catalogue raisonnĂ©, 1999). This influence, of course, was the art of Japan and Japanese prints in particular. The models for this composition also relate to Platt's sketches for the "Giant Stride." His sisters are on the swing and they are being observed by Platt's daughter and son.      SOLD
