Two Skulls - ANTOON DERKZEN VAN ANGEREN
Medium: etching
ANTOON DERKZEN VAN ANGEREN
Dutch, (1878-1961)
Etching, 1906, edition unknown. 14 1/2 x 11 3/4 in. Signed and dated in pencil. Here we have a fine impression of this compelling print. The margins are full and the condition is excellent. He started out as a decorator of Delft pottery and ultimately taught printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam from 1917-1943. He moved to Canada after the war and lived there the rest of his life. His etchings are discussed on pages 172-173 of Holland on Paper in the Age of Art Nouveau (2014) by Cliff Ackley. Skulls as a still life are a favorite subject of the artist. This idea of momento mori relates back to still life painting in the Netherlands during the 17th century.
