The Dance Recital - MAUD AINSLIE
Medium: woodcut printed in colors
MAUD AINSLIE
American, (1870-1960)
Woodcut printed in colors, 1912-1915, Edition unknown. 7 7/8 x 9 in. Signed in pencil, lower left. This is a fine, luminous impression of this extremely rare print. The condition is very good apart from modest discoloration in the left margin from some old tape. The margins are substantial on all sides (about 3/4") but the image has been printed to the right edge of the sheet. (Irregular margins are so often the case with blockprinters!) Ainslie's work was featured in Janet Flint's seminal exhibition, Provincetown Printers, A Woodcut Tradition (1983). She was one of the early woodcut artists in Provincetown and she studied with Dow and Zorach. Dance as subject is not terribly common as subject in American printmaking.
