Provincetown Wharf - JULIETTE S. NICHOLS
Medium: white line color woodcut
JULIETTE S. NICHOLS
American, (circa 1870-after 1957)
White line color woodcut, circa 1920, very small edition. 5 7/8 x 6 3/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. This is a fine impression printed on an a cream-colored Japanese paper. The margins are full and the condition is very good. (There's a wrinkle and a couple of soft creases in the image from the printing process.) Nichols was one of the original group of Provincetown woodcut artists. She arrived from Paris in 1915 and her work was in the First Annual Exhibition of the Provincetown Art Association. In addition, her work was included in the seminal exhibition organized by Janet Flint in 1983, Provincetown Printers; A Woodcut Tradition. Prints by this artist are extremely rare.
