Environs de Rome - JEAN-BAPTISTE-CAMILLE COROT - etching

JEAN-BAPTISTE-CAMILLE COROT
French, (1796-1875)

Etching, 1866, Melot C6 (ii/III); Delteil 6 (ii/III); edition unknown. 12 3/8 x 9 1/4 in. Signed in the plate, lower left. This is a superb, luminous impression as printed by Delatre for the Societe des Aquafortistes; 4th year, 7th selection, March 1866. The background details are printing quite clearly and the inking of the plate is dramatically rendered. The margins are full and the paper is a fine laid with the AQUAFORTISTES watermark. The blindstamp of Cadart and Luquet, publishers, is in the bottom margin. The condition is excellent. This is arguably Corot's finest etching seen here in a stellar, lifetime impression. This plate was eventually reworked and reissued posthumously by Frederick Keppel in New York. These late, worn impressions are to be avoided.      SOLD
