Portrait of the Artist - AUGUSTUS JOHN
Etching, circa 1901, Dodgson 6, edition 50 as published by the Chenil Gallery in 1919. 5 1/8 x 3 15/16 in. Signed in the plate, lower left, and signed in pencil, lower right. Inscribed in brown ink by the publisher, John Knewstub, with his plate number (109), the title and the impression number; all along the lower part of the sheet. The margins are probably full and the condition is very good. (The sheet is slightly toned on the verso. There's a bit of thinning at the top corners from early hinges.) This is an outstanding example of John's self portraiture shown here in a rich, dramatic impression. This print is thought to have been etched in Liverpool while he was teaching there from 1901-02.
