Avondstilte (Evening Silence) - WOJ NIEUWENKAMP
Etching, 1903, Hubert E77 (ii/II), Nieuwenkamp E77; edition 12 plus one proof in the first state. 5 3/8 x 7 3/4 in. Signed in the plate, lower left. Signed and titled in pencil and inscribed "épreuve d'artiste." This is a fine impression printed on cream wove paper. The margins are probably full. There's some faint, old adhesive at the outer margin edges, verso, from an early mount. This small, charming print is one of a small group of fishing boat studies Nieuwenkamp produced. (He maintained a floating artist's studio; he kept his printing press on his houseboat and would travel the Dutch waterways in search of subjects to draw and etch. The boat was called De Zwerver (The Wanderer).
