In Den Avond ('In the Evening') - ANTONIUS ANTONIUS JOHANNES DERKINDEREN - lithograph

ANTONIUS ANTONIUS JOHANNES DERKINDEREN
Dutch, (1859-1925)

Lithograph, 1897, edition unknown. 12 1/2 x 19 1/8 in. Initialed on the stone and signed with a printed signature lower right. This is a fine impression (a proof?) with margins in very good condition. Ex-collection: Ph.J(ansen) (Not in Lugt). An outstanding example of late 19th century Dutch art nouveau symbolist design. Reference: Noordbrabants Museum catalogue page 110 (# 58). This image symbolizes old age and impending death. There are the angels of the last judgement on each side of the seated figures (or guardian angels) and zodiac symbols galore. The symbol of fire and the sword relate to the image of the Mercurius Cross depicted in the center. Derkinderen was also a muralist and he did some stained glass work. His prints are not so common. (This print also appeared in a larger edition as a supplement to De Kroniek, with a centerfold and small printed text at top.)      SOLD
