The Garden Bench (Le Banc de Jardin) - JAMES TISSOT
Medium: mezzotint

JAMES TISSOT
French, (1836-1902)
Mezzotint, 1883, Wentworth 75 (i/III), edition about 500. 16 3/8 x 22 1/16 in. Signed in the plate, lower left. This a superb, early impression of the rare first state, before the bold, cursive lettering of the signature and title. The paper is a sturdy wove paper and the condition is fine. The margins are wide and probably full. This large and exceptional print presents yet another techincal achievement for Tissot, having mastered this difficult medium and doing so on a large scale. Wentworth suggests that Seymour Haden may have introduced him to mezzotint, or possibly the printer, Frederick Goulding. One oil sketch of the subject is known to still exist. SOLD
