Croquet (Le Croquet)
Etching and drypoint, 1878, Wentworth 37, edition about 100. 12 x 7 in. Signed and dated in the plate. This is a fine, rich impression printed on a cream, medium-weight Japanese paper. The margins are wide and probably full. The condition is fine apart from the slightest suggestion of lightening within an early mat opening. There's a related oil and a gouache of this charming subject.

Etching and drypoint, 1881, Wentworth 54, edition about 100. 11 3/4 x 7 7/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower left, and with the artist's red stamp (Lugt 1545) in the lower right. This is a fine impression on laid paper with full margins. The condition is very good apart from a skillfully repaired tear in the lower margin, well away from the image. This stellar print was included in "A Portfolio of Autograph Etchings" published by James R. Osgood & Co, Boston.

Le Banc de Jardin (The Garden Bench)
Mezzotint, 1883, Wentworth 75 (i/III), edition at least 500 in the three states). 16 1/2 x 22 1/8 in. Signed in the plate, lower left. This is a superb, luminous impression printed on a chine applique. The margins are full and the condition is fine. Tissot mastered the difficult art of mezzotint. This medium enjoyed renewed interest in the 1880s and Seymour Haden, among others, took it up with enthusiasm. Frederick Goulding may have brought this medium to the attention of Tissot.

Signed in pencil and also with the red initial stamp in the upper right corner (See Lugt 1545). This is a superb impression of this engaging print. The margins are full showing a deckle edge on all sides. The condition is excellent. This print relates to a photograph of Mrs. Newton and a man in the background on the chair. There's also an oil painting which has not been located.

The margins are full and the condition is excellent. "In the late 1870s, Tissot experimented with the tall, narrow format of Japanese hashira-e, prints designed for display on the pillars of houses, and in works like Printemps and Au Bord de la Mer." Sunday Morning (Le dimance matin)
Etching and drypoint, 1883, Wentworth 72, edition unknown. 15 3/4 x 7 1/2 in. Signed and dated in the plate, lower right. Signed with Tissot's red ink stamp (Lugt 1545) also in the lower right corner. This is a superb impression with apparently the full margins. The condition is fine. (There's a subtle printing crease in the lower margin.) This print is supposedly done after a pastel of the same title exhibited at the Palais de l'Industrie in 1883. It's current whereabouts is unknown. Provenance: Associated American Artists, New York, with their label and the invoice for this print.

This is a superb, luminous impression printed on VAN GELDER watermarked paper. The margins are full and the condition is excellent. This stellar work is from the collection of Michael Wentworth, the author of the catalogue raisonné of the artist's prints. (His name is stamped in black ink in the lower margin, Lugt 4860.) In the distance beyond the portico is the Church of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square.
